‘We Can…’ looks at the person behind the condition. Each photograph introduces the person’s ability, empowering them to share their stories in a creative way and helping break down barriers for inclusion within communities. ‘We Can…’ aims to reduce isolation and, ultimately, fear of the unknown.

Aim

‘We Can…’ was created to raise awareness of peoples’ ability. In our previous campaigns, participants have reported that they felt less isolated and more empowered to speak out about their situations as a result of taking part. This photographic series continued this work: the sitters were able to demonstrate their value to the wider community allowing the viewer to see the ability of those often defined by their perceived limitations.

How?

We worked with eight students attending Coleg Cambria, photographing them working at their chosen topic of study. We created short films and written narratives to then give a fuller depiction of their abilities and their perspective as to what their disability means to them. The exhibition was toured across North Wales displayed in schools, community venues and a variety of public spaces - allowing a wide audience to gain a new perspective.

Impact

‘We Can…’ was picked up widely after its launch by national and UK media including coverage by BBC Wales, the Mail Online and Huffington Post, amongst others.

An integral aspect of the planned impact of ‘We Can…’ was to tour the exhibition using everyday, publicly accessible spaces in order to maximise conversation amongst the general public. This was achieved by exhibiting locally and regionally across North Wales.
