‘Journey of Hope’ is a short film offering a glimpse into the lives of three families whose children have received a rare genomic diagnosis. The film premiered at the Rare Disease Film Festival in London on 10th February 2019 and won best film in the Industry-Charity collaboration category.

Aim

For Illumina, this collaborative project aimed to give authentic weight and a real-life reality to the diagnostic processes that their company achieves. Documenting the stories of three families, whose children have received a rare genomic diagnosis, the short film aims to visually represent the realities of this journey and the emotional impact at diagnosis. It offers an insight into the emotional and turbulent search that this journey provides.

Process

Filmed across three locations (Amsterdam, Bartoszyce & Cambridge) ‘Journey of Hope’ blends the clinical aesthetic of the diagnostic procedure with the weighted reality of the diagnosis being introduced into a families home. Allowing the three families involved the opportunity and space to speak openly about the journey and reception of this diagnosis created a film with a very honest perspective, connecting deeply with its audience and allowing those working in diagnostic facilities, and beyond, the opportunity to see the reality of what this moment brings.

Impact

‘Journey of Hope’ has been selected for eight film festivals and won best film in the Industry-Charity collaboration category at the Rare Disease Film Festival in 2019 with over 3000 votes.
