Equipped for Life
Life beyond the forces.
In collaboration and sponsorship with
The collaboration between Creative Director, Ceridwen Hughes, and Glyndŵr University researcher, Dr. Nikki Lloyd Jones, resulted in ‘Equipped for Life’: a visual journey into the world of those who have left the Armed Forces and their experience of transition back to life as a civilian. The photographic series supported a two year research project at the University, ‘Leaving the Armed Forces and Living as a Civilian’ - the two touring together at various military establishments in the UK after it's launch.
Aim
‘Equipped for Life’ aims to highlight and raise awareness of the transitional experience of veterans, opening collective dialogue about what can be done to ease this process. Committed to trying to bridge communications between those who have a military background and those who do not, this photographic series, and the accompanying narratives, contribute to the conversation about the transition to becoming a civilian.
Process
Invitations for sitters were issued to those who took part in the original research project and any other ex-Armed Forces members who wanted to take part. Ten participants were recorded and filmed in conversation with the researcher. Salient issues identified from their experience - which resonated with the findings of the research - provided the creative brief and detailing for each photographic image.
Impact
The series toured across the UK following its launch, used at conferences and military celebrations designed to engage the public and the military in conversation around transition:
FiMT conference at the QEII Conference Centre Westminster
Community Arts Venue, Wrexham during the RAF Centenary Celebrations
RAF Cosford for the 2018 RAF 100 Medical Services Health Symposium

During this period, the photographic series, and accompanying narratives, were seen and read by thousands of the public, helping to raise awareness and provide a tool for conversation and change.
